From the NYTimes Lens blog, on the ethics of cropping.
Interesting point of view from the photographer, but the staunch defense of objectivity always rings hollow to me. Yes, a photo should tell the truth — tell a story — and capture an authentic moment, teach us something, make us feel. But none of those things are contigent on objectivity, and isn’t it the photographer’s subjectivity that makes the photo interesting in the first place? And couldn’t it be said that a photo is always editorializing in a way, because it’s showcasing a single moment removed from the context of the millions of other moments that aren’t captured?
None of that really has much to do with this specific cropping choice at Newsweek, but the essay got me thinking.
